Badger Region High Performance teams shine at USA All-Star Championships in Orlando

Wednesday, August 4th, 2021

The Badger Region High Performance teams all earned victories that landed them in the top (gold) brackets of their respective divisions at the inaugural USA All-Star Championships that wrapped up July 25 in Orlando, Fla.
In the end, two teams earned bronze medals (Girls National Select and Boys National Select) at the tournament and two teams (Girls International Youth and Boys National Youth) finished in fifth place after falling in the International Youth Bracket Quarterfinals

Also representing the Badger Region at the tournament were Lead Official Julie Voeck and Referee Francisco Torres-Rivera.

Badger Region Program Director Brian Sharkey, who also served as a Team Rep/Assistant Coach for the boys teams, was a member of the 2021 planning committee. Badger Region Executive Director/Commissioner Jennifer Armson-Dyer served as one of the on-site tournament directors.

Planning has already begun for the 2022 USA All-Star Championships, which the Badger Region looks forward to contributing to.

Girls International Youth

The Badger Region Girls International Youth team came home with a fifth-place finish at the 2021 USA All-Star Championships

By finishing with a 3-1 record in pool play and winning their Challenge Match over Iowa International Youth, the team secured its spot in the Girls International Select playoff division. There they fell to Arizona International Youth in a hard fought five set match (25-18, 20-25, 22-25, 29-31).

This year’s team was made up of athletes born in 2004 and 2005.

This year’s event featured two new regions which helped showcase growth of High Performance programs around the country: Southern and North Country Regions

At the event, the Iowa Region won the coveted Region Cup that is awarded to the Region with the most top finishes at the event.

Girls National Select

The Badger Region Girls National Select team came home with the bronze medal at the 2021 USA All-Star Championships.

By finishing with a 4-1 record in pool play, the team was forced to “play up” into the Girls International Select playoff division. There they fell to Arizona International Select in a thrilling five-set match. But they came back against Iowa Select Black to earn the bronze.

By Setter/right side hitter Andi Spiess was named to the All-Tournament team.

This year’s team was made up of athletes born in 2006 and 2007.

Boys National Youth

The Badger Region Boys National Youth team came home with a fifth-place finish at the 2021 USA All-Star Championships

By finishing with a 2-2 record in pool play and winning their Challenge Match over the WEVA (New York) Youth-Blue team, the Badger Region Youth boys secured its spot in the Boys International Select playoff division (the division above where the team had signed up for). There they fell to Florida Youth in a hard fought match.

Much like the Badger Boys National Select team, the Youth Boys only lost to two teams on the week (Florida and Iowa), both of which appeared in the championship match of the International Youth division of the USA All-Star Championships

This year’s team was made up of athletes born in 2003 and 2004.

At the event, the Iowa Region won the coveted Region Cup that is awarded to the Region with the most top finishes at the event.

Boys National Select

The Badger Region Boys National Select team came home with the bronze medal at the 2021 USA All-Star Championships.

Much like the Badger Region Boys Youth Team, the Select team’s only losses on the week were to the Gold and Silver medalists in the event. The team was also the only squad to take sets off of the champion Puerto Rican team in pool play.

Setter/right side hitter Nathan Flayter was named to the All-Tournament team.

This year’s team was made up of athletes born in 2005 and 2006.
