Looking back at the year 2020 from a Badger Region Volleyball perspective

The positive thing about winter’s recent arrival (Dec. 21) is that from now until the end of June, days will continue to get longer and there are brighter things ahead.

That’s a good thing after all we have been through in 2020. But let’s not totally throw this past year in the trash. The Badger Region has been hard at work producing events, 26 Badger Beacons, referee training opportunities, club director education, coaching certifications and MUCH more.

So, before you enjoy one more serving of figgy pudding or take down your Christmas tree, enjoy our look back on all the great things we did here in the Badger Region (with some help from our partner organizations) in 2020.

  • Jan. 11-12: Badger Region Power League kicks off its second year at locations around the state
  • Jan. 19: Badger Boys Series kicks off for six year in a row offering competition for boys ages 13 and under
  • Jan. 20: Recent Badger Region Meritorious Service Award Winners (Sara Voigt, Sue Rohde, Eddie Zelhofer, Tom Galecke, and Kurt Officer) recognized prior to the Milwaukee Bucks game
  • Feb. 3: Badger Region Board of Director Meeting
  • Feb. 6: Badger Region announces partnership with Junior Volleyball Recruiting Association (JVRA)
  • Feb. 8-9: Second weekend of Badger Region Power League
  • Feb. 14: Celebrated BRYFVL night at the Concordia University Wisconsin NCAA men’s volleyball match
  • Feb. 29-March 1: Badger Region Qualifier at the Milwaukee Sting Center
  • March 12: Due to COVID-19, Badger Region cancels Badger Region Championships and Dale Rohde Memorial Boys Tournament scheduled for March 14-15, 21-22 and 28-29)
  • March 22: Badger Region Downtime Blog debuts offering over two months of activities and ideas to get through quarantine
  • April 14: Badger Region hosts a virtual college coaches panel with the AVCA
  • April 15: Badger Region hosts a virtual college coaches panel for Region coaches/club directors with the Junior Volleyball Recruiting Association (JVRA)
  • May 4: Badger Region Board of Directors meeting
  • May 7: Fifteen athletes named Badger Region scholarship recipients. Two additional athletes named FriscoMo scholarship winners for community service
  • May 21: Badger Region announces second annual AVCA/Badger Region Coach of the Year and Club Director of the Year awards (Casey Price, Kevin Scopoline, Emma Kane, Alec BIrz, Alex Moe, Allison Silveira-Haworth,
    BJ Le Roy, Josh Price)
  • May 24: Final Badger Region Downtime Blog
  • May 27: Badger Region announces Meritorious Serve Award Winners (Dave Bayer, Teague Prichard, Shane Reid and Eddie Zelhofer)
  • June 4: Badger Region Referee John Nelson wins USA Volleyball’s Clinician of the Year award
  • July 2: Badger Region adopts a diversity and inclusion statement to guide staff and board on efforts having to do with equity.
  • July 13-14: Badger Region High Performance training session for boys at Nicolet High School
  • July 28: Badger Region coaches win National AVCA coaching and club directing awards
  • July 30: Badger Region athletes compete at the Junior Beach Tour Championships in Alabama
  • Aug. 1-10: Badger Region offers “Retention Period” for clubs and athletes who played during the 2019-20 season
  • Aug. 2: Badger Region Junior Club Director meeting (held virtually, of course)
  • Aug. 3-4: Badger Region High Performance training session for girls at the New Berlin Sportsplex
  • Aug. 13: USA Volleyball modifies its Age Definition Calendar to accommodate athletes born in the months of July and August.
  • Sept. 1: USAV and Badger Region launches Sports Engine as its member management system and the start of the 2020-21 membership season
  • Sept. 10: The Badger Region Youth Fall Volleyball League returns at the Milwaukee Sting Center and the New Berlin Sportsplex
  • Sept. 17: The virtual open house debuts in place of having in-person open house events
  • Sept. 20: Badger Region Board of Director meeting (virtually, of course)
  • Oct 3: Tryouts begin for athletes 14-and-under
  • Oct. 22: The debut of the “5 Questions With” segment
  • Oct. 24-25: Conclusion of the 2020 BRYFVL season
  • Oct. 27: Badger Region announces clubs can apply for a tryout date application via a waiver process
  • Nov. 1: Badger Region Board of Directors meeting
  • Nov. 5: Results from the 2020 Badger Region Family Survey released
  • Nov. 7: WIAA concludes a modified high school season
  • Nov. 14: Tryouts begin for athletes 15-and-older
  • Nov. 19: Former Badger Region president Julie Voeck named to international NORCECA officiating commission
  • Dec. 11: USA Volleyball announces modifications to the national High Performance program, now calling it the National Team Development Program
  • Dec. 12: Badger Region/Art of Coaching Talent ID clinic at Milwaukee Sting Center
  • Dec. 13: First Badger Region tournament hosted since March.
